The Magic Carpet Prayer Mat/ Scarf

The magic carpet has always been a form of portrayl in varies folklore tales about the east and created in the west. Films such as Aladdin conveyed a generic view of the east. But the east is a large region one that encapsulates varies cultures and traditions and countries. With this piece, Noura wanted to take back what the magic carpet is and the meaning behind it. The magic carpet was inspired by the Prophet Sulaiman’s story. In our times, one could think of the prayer mat that is used by muslim as a magic carpet, because in essence it transports you. The personal feeling that connected me to my home town while studying in London. The design was executed to express the feeling of prayer and also make it in a material that is fluid and luxuries, one that can be used in both ways.

Swarovski x RCA Sustainability Competition - Winner

For this collection, Noura was asked to reform, rework and rethink beautiful jewellery pieces whose life cycle has seemingly reached an end and transform into different elements. As a designer and artist, Noura felt the need to preserve the jewellery piece but still create something new with it. Thus came the idea of creating a pattern digitally. This is where the piece came to life, with a new meaning for sustainability.
